STS’s spring Musical production will be “Godspell” by Stephen Schwartz and John-
Michael Tebelak. This fantastic folk-rock musical, based on the Gospell of Mathew, is
all about something close to STS’s heart; BUILDING COMMUNITY.
With this production we hope to truly involve Phoenicia and the surrounding towns in
both the spirit and functioning of STS. Artistic Director Amy Wallace will direct and
choreograph and we are so fortunate that local Mezzo Soprano, Maria Todaro will be
serving as musical director. Alan Shevlo will design the nature inspired set (a
rendering of The Tanbark Trail) the highlight of which will be paintings by local artist
Brian Mateer. We are hoping to involve the Phoenicia Community Choir as well.
We will be using an updated score that is a little more rock than folk rock and brings
this 70’s classic into this century with style. We hope to find some local musicians;
keyboardists, drummers, guitarists to make up a band that will, quite simply, rock the
theatre.
Also, we will be continuing the sponsorship programs we began with “The Miser” this
year. Businesses and individuals are invited to become sponsors of “Godspell”.
Sponsors are offered shared advertising opportunities in the print ads as well as on
our website, and are also invited to bring their guests to a special “Sponsor Night”
performance. The costs of putting on musical productions are significant (rights,
musicians, costumes, sets, etc.) and reaching out to the community we serve to help
us mount our productions in return for a special showing which allows them to share
what they helped to create with their guests enhances our symbiotic relationship with
the town of Shandaken.
We are also looking for donations or the opportunity to borrow some materials we will
need such as lumber, grey paint, water shoes, climbing gear, museum ropes (those
velvet ropes on stands in movie theatres and museums) etc. Keep an eye out on our
website www.stsplayhouse.com for a full wish list for the production.
